"Only the Paintings Seemed Pleased
at the Engagement of the Artist and the Handmaiden"

oil on canvas, part of the Cafe Florian Series, captures our two lovers
becoming engaged to the shock and dismay of the lady in the rear. An old
boy friend, seated in the middle rear of the painting, turns up his nose
and gulps down his drink. The masked character seated in the left of the
cafe holds up the head of her date who has passed out upon hearing the
news. And only the figures in the paintings seemed pleased. |
