The Derailers
Full Western Dress
Sire
Morella Raleigh

Produced by Blasters frontman Dave Alvin, this latest release from Oregon-cum-Texas boys The Derailers is an overall testament to the group's extreme versatility in the styles of country and western - and pop. The Derailers write and play the kind of music that can immediately transport you to a smoky bar with a dirty dance floor and make you yearn for last minute, late night love. And there are plenty of those songs on Full Western Dress. From the fictional honky tonk "The Lost and Found" (where through good music and better drink you always "lose yourself" and "find yourself") to the celebratory break up song "Someone Else's Problem" ("…that's all she is to me"), the band stays on that road they know so well.

But Full Western Dress demonstrates another musical side of The Derailers - a talent for early '60s, fun-lovin' pop that's as influenced by the Brill Building sound as most Derailers tunes are by Bakersfield's Buccaroos. The recording's cover of Phil Spector's classic "Then She Kissed Me" showcases the group's knack for simple pop melodies, but the originals "Just to Spend the Night With You" and "(I'm Gonna) Love, Love, Love You" proves the group's obvious affection for the sound.

The Derailers' songs tell stories - most without beginnings or ends. Detailing vignettes of lives full of emotion, excesses and attitude, Tony Villavara's deeply enticing yet, agonized voice matches Brian Hofeldt's twangy guitar bit by bit.

The opening song, "Life of Luxury" sets the pace for the entire disc - as upbeat, straightforward and catchy as they come. Mentor and Buccaroos leader, Buck Owens, appears on the disc, doing a guest vocal stint on the classic "Play Me The Waltz of The Angels," a slow, true blue love song that'll make you cry in an instant.

While The Derailers shouldn't hang up their cowboy hats for long, whether it's the Beach Boys or Buck Owens, they carry a musical torch, that's worth keeping aflame.
