Tigerlilies / El Gigante at Sudsy Malone's

Two of Cincinnati's best bands actually, besides Sound Mind, these are probably my two favorite local bands, got together and shared a bill to give the people what they want... a great rock show! El Gigante kicked the night off and simply put, THEY RULE!
Their heavy, melodic sound is reminiscent of Quicksand, the latest Helmet stuff, and even Cheap Trick. Cincinnati 's best new band, which consists of Jim Turner on lead vocals and guitar, Andy Hill on guitar, Mike Montgomery on bass, and Pete Riley on drums, rocked through an extremely tight 40-minute set that showcased what the rock world can look forward to hearing in the new millenium.
El Gigante put's the rock back into rock and roll so keep an eye out for them as they plan on releasing a debut CD and taking over the world. Following El Gigante's smokin' set was Atavistic recording artist, The Tigerlilies.
The Tigerlilies, featuring Pat Hennessy on lead vocals and guitar, Denny Brown on guitar and vocals, Brian Driscoll on bass, and Steve Hennessy on drums and vocals, combine parts of power pop, punk, and alternative indie rock to create a bouncy, punchy rock sound that has been winning fans in Cincinnati as well as nationally.
Their set consisted of many songs from their last Atavistic CD, 1997's "Space Age Love Songs", including 'Soul Kiss', 'Chances Are', and my personal favorite, 'Hopeless' as well as a number of new songs that make me anxious to hear their next release.
The Tigerlilies main set, which had the crowd dancing and singing aong, was followed by a two-song encore consisting of AC/DC's 'It's a Long Way to the Top' and ABBA's 'S.O.S.' that finished off what turned out to be a great night of rock and roll. Look for big things from both bands in '99.
